[1] In this edition of the Journal of Lutheran Ethics we will consider three reviews covering philosophy, ELCA social teaching, and Christian Nationalism.<\/p>\n

[2] Charles Duke reviewed Jon Stewart\u2019s fascinating comprehensive examination of 19th century nihilism. Duke\u2019s working definition of nihilism\u2014the view that nothing, including human existence, possesses ultimate meaning or significance\u2014remonstrates the useful reappraisal of a philosophical idea that has persistently influenced art, literature, and theology from the enlightenment to the present. As Duke forcefully establishes, nihilism, as understood by Stewart, is more than a destructive and corrosive pathology; it provides an intellectual challenge that forcefully continues to shape modern thought and literature.<\/p>\n

[3] Thomas Johnston reviewed James Childs\u2019 ReEngaging ELCA Social Teaching on Church in Society<\/em>, and the impact this social teaching document has had on the life of the church. Johnston discusses the historical context of the document, addresses the challenges confronted by the nascent ELCA at the time of the document\u2019s writing, and the contemporary relevance of the refreshingly reflective nature of Lutheran deliberation.<\/p>\n

[4] In a continuing series of articles and reviews on Christian Nationalism, William Rodriguez reviewed Matthew Boedy\u2019s The Seven Mountains Mandate<\/em>. Christian Dominionism, the ideological foundation of Christian Nationalism, promotes the \u201cChristianizing\u201d of seven key spheres of societal influence\u2014religion, family, education, government, media, arts & entertainment, and business & economy. Boedy examines the history, prominent figures, and agenda of each sphere. The review includes study guides, provided by the publisher, for Bible Study and Book Clubs.<\/p>\n

These books can be mailed to interested parties.
