[1] In Sharing the Wisdom of Time<\/em>, Pope Francis presents a compelling narrative that underscores the ethical duty of elders to share their life experiences with younger generations, and the respect younger generations owe them. The book is a collection of stories about elderly role models from across the world, interviewed by young interviewers, for the purpose of offering insights into perseverance, faith, love, and resilience. Through these stories, Pope Francis advocates for an alliance between these generations, reinforcing the idea that wisdom is not merely acquired, but must be actively transmitted to shape a more compassionate and fulfilled society through shared experience, and in order to perpetuate our survival as a species.\u00a0 These concepts are summarized by two powerful statements made by Pope Francis:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe elderly have wisdom. They are entrusted with great responsibility: to transmit their life experience, their family history, the history of a community, of a people.\u201d<\/em> (iii)<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, today it is important for the future of humanity that the young talk to the old.\u201d<\/em>[i]<\/a><\/p>\n

[2] The sense that society has silenced and pushed away the elderly of this generation without giving them a chance to speak about their lives, share their experiences or tell their stories constitutes our loss of the treasure of their wisdom. This is the most salient theme of the book. By silencing their voices they are marginalized, left to feel abandoned, which contributes to a cynical turn when all they desire is to feel included. Bringing together the younger and the older generations bridges this divide and celebrates how the younger generations can learn and thrive from the wisdom of their elders.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel that this is what the Lord wants me to say: there should be an alliance between young and old people\u201d<\/em> (xx).<\/p>\n

[3] One of the central themes of the book is the responsibility of elders to serve as “memory keepers.” Pope Francis argues that wisdom should not be hoarded but shared, ensuring that younger generations benefit from the lessons of the past.
