{"id":49,"date":"2019-05-06T18:45:08","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T18:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/learn.elca.org\/jle\/?page_id=49"},"modified":"2025-09-09T21:04:53","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T21:04:53","slug":"lutheran-ethicist-network","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/learn.elca.org\/jle\/lutheran-ethicist-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Lutheran Ethicists&#8217; Network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lutheran Ethicists\u2019 Network (LEN) brings into association and into conversation individuals with various competencies and interests: professors from universities and seminaries, pastors, bishops, chaplains, deacons, lay people trained in ethics, graduate students, and others who have strong interests in ethics and a commitment to the Lutheran tradition. \u00a0Through its connection to the ELCA\u2019s Theological Discernment Team in the Office of the Presiding Bishop, the Network serves as an informal consulting and deliberative resource that provides dedicated support for the Theological Ethics desk of the ELCA, with its work dedicated to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The publication of the Journal of Lutheran Ethics,<\/li>\n<li>The development of social statements, messages and policy resolutions,<\/li>\n<li>The study and analysis of social issues from theological and ethical perspectives,<\/li>\n<li>The encouragement of efforts that help the ELCA to live into its identify as a community of moral discernment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A semi-annual newsletter (late spring and early fall) supplies news and information about the work of Theological Ethics, the Lutheran Ethicists\u2019 Gathering (LEG, see below), and publications by members of the Network.\u00a0 Contact the ELCA\u2019s Director for Theological Ethics, <a href=\"mailto:Ryan.Cumming@elca.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0Dr. Ryan Cumming<\/a>\u00a0for more information or to join the Network\u2019s mailing list.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Lutheran Ethicists\u2019 Gathering<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Network meets in person on an annual basis at the Lutheran Ethicists\u2019 Gathering (LEG) each January. For nearly 30 years, 25 -40 participants have been meeting to discuss mutually agreed upon topics. The Gathering has taken on a wide array of topics but gives particular attention to the intersection of Christian ethics with the church\u2019s presence in society.\u00a0 The Gathering provides a sustained conversation place within the Network, benefiting both those involved and the wider church. It occurs on the Wednesday evening and Thursday directly prior to the annual meetings of the Society of Christian Ethics and in the same venue.\u00a0 Information about the next Gathering appears in the LEN newsletter and on the registration site each fall.
